I would like to express the deepest appreciation to my committee chair Professor _________, who has the attitude and the substance of a genius: he continually and convincingly conveyed a spirit of adventure in regard to research and scholarship, and an excitement in regard to teaching. Without his guidance and persistent help this dissertation would not have been possible.
I would like to thank my committee members, Professor _______ and Professor _______, whose work demonstrated to me that concern for global affairs supported by an “engagement” in comparative literature and modern technology, should always transcend academia and provide a quest for our times.
In addition, a thank you to Professor _________, who introduced me to Linguistics, and whose enthusiasm for the “underlying structures” had lasting effect. I thank the University of _______ for permission to include copyrighted pictures as a part of my dissertation. I also thank ___ Press for permission to include Chapter 5 of my dissertation, which was originally published in ____ Journal. I would also like to thank to _______ Foundation for their financial support granted through predoctoral fellowship.
Im doing a final year maths project, 6-8000 words, never written anything like this before. on the template it just said acknowledge people who might have helped you. I asked my supervisor if I had to have one and she said I may like to thank my sister who's helped me.
Thing is i didnt find my supervisor that helpful this year and not sure if i really want to thank her, in a way shes made things harder and i dont really like her. there was another lecturer who was helpful but i dont think i could thank him without putting her down too, although i didnt get on with him in the first year. could i just put thank you to the lecturers that helped me, without naming names?
How do i thank my sister and parents (although not brother) but i dont want to say they've given me emotional support as i dont really think they have much. my sister helped proof reading it and made loads of changes.
also can i thank my pet hamster? shes really been the one who has helped me get through the past 2 years at uni, without her im sure my depression would have been a lot worse and i wouldnt have coped.
Does anyone have any ideas about how i phrase it all?
If you include acknowledgments for an undergrad project, it is customary to include your supervisor. If you feel that you can't name her & thank her, then don't include acknowledgments. You don't want to offend someone unnecessarily, especially if they could be writing references and so on for you in the future. I had a friend who didn't get on at all with her supervisor, and he was in no way helpful (she, like you, got help from a different lecturer), but to avoid friction she just didn't include any acknowledgments, they're not expected at undergrad level.
I don't think it's really appropriate for you to include your hamster in an academic acknowledgment section. Perhaps it'd be best if you just didn't include one if it's that complicated for you?
